Now it’s time for the Idaho Power energy efficiency tip of the week.
June’s longer days are great for tackling those outdoor projects, such as replacing your home’s worn-out roof. It’s a big job but there’s a cool way to do it.
Consider installing a “cool roof” using light-reflecting materials. A cool roof is typically light in color and reflects and emits the sun’s energy so your home stays cool. The benefits to you are:
- Increased comfort, especially during these hot summer months
- Reduced air conditioning use, resulting in energy savings
- Longer roof life
When choosing reflective roof materials:
- Look for ENERGY STAR® qualified roof products
- Ask about the solar reflective value (the higher the solar reflective value the more efficient the product is in reflecting sunlight and heat away from your home)
If you’re replacing a roof for your business, Idaho Power’s Easy Upgrades program pays 5 cents per square foot for reflective roof coatings on commercial flat roofs. Our Building Efficiency program pays the same incentive for reflective roof coatings on flat roofs for new construction. To qualify for an incentive, the roofing product used must be ENERGY STAR rated with a 70 percent initial solar reflectivity.
If you’re interested in putting a cool roof on your home, you may qualify for a federal tax credit. See a tax professional for details.
