Bonus Rooms

The Home Performance with Energy Star program has consistently alluded to comfort as the main reason to invest in greater home efficiency.  If difficult to condition spaces are an indication of an efficiency opportunity then bonus rooms and upstairs spaces represent an efficiency bonanza.

Bonus room usage is frequently disappointing due to intolerable comfort problems.  Many homeowners avoid these spaces during the months with the most extreme temperatures.  Others decide to attempt to overcome the problem by throwing more energy at it in the form of lowering the entire home’s temperature or installing a window air conditioner.

Maintaining a comfortable temperature and proper air flow to a room with five exposed surfaces presents unique challenges. Join Idaho Power and Build With Vision’s Eric Elliot on Monday, Nov. 9 for a free class that looks at bonus rooms and the issues and solutions to the comfort challenges you face.

Eric will be discussing:

  • Heating and cooling equipment
  • Insulation
  • Ventilation
  • Windows and doors
  • Weatherization
  • Duct sealing
  • Lighting
  • Shading
  • Blinds
  • Skylights

And, he will address how each of these items can contribute to conquering bonus room comfort problems while saving energy.

Eric Elliot will be speaking on November 9 from 7 to 9 p.m. as a part of Idaho Power and Boise Public Library’s “Fall 2009 Energy Efficiency & Green Living Series.” Please attend, Monday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. at the Boise Public Library.
